About the Piece:

Michael and I were hired to do some interior monster illustrations for Frog God Games's printing of . I was hoping for some vile, demonic monsters to illustrate, but alas, all that was left were the Sphinxes. But I decided to make these as awesome as I could.

Of the 4 sphinxes that I illustrated, this was my favorite and most popular. The Androsphinx has the body of a lion, and the head of a man. The Criosphinx has the head of a ram, the body of a lion, and the wings of an eagle, and likes to set up impromptu toll roads. The Hieracosphinx has the head and wings of an hawk and the body of a lion. And then the Gynosphinx, the upper torso of a woman, whose forearms turn into that of a lion around the elbow. So pretty much a sphinx with human boobs.

I worked on this particular piece while attending a drawing class with Larry Elmore. I tell you what, he did enjoy coming by my space to "check out" the art I was working on.

About the Artist:

Paul and his brother Michael opened Aradani Studios in 2002, selling both their artwork and costuming as they travelled all across the US. Paul’s medium of choice is charcoal, a passion he discovered in college. He loves the fluidity of it, the ease of moving it across the page with a simple gesture, and on the flipside, the challenge of it, such a simple gesture can also erase hours of painstaking detail. Paul’s work has won numerous awards around the country, including the prestigious Chesley Award in 2006, for Best Monochrome Unpublished for his piece Nightmare. He currently resides in Nashville, TN, where he, his brother, and sister continue to expand and build their elf ear empire. You can see his artwork at .
